Five offline RPGs worth clearing storage for

Offline RPGs are a strange corner of the app stores. Most of the flashy ones quietly require a connection to save your game, which defeats the point. But a handful of developers still build complete adventures that live entirely on your device.

The first thing I look for is a real save system. If closing the app risks losing an hour of progress, it's out. The second is whether the game respects your time or leans on energy bars and daily timers, which almost always signal an online-first design.

Turn-based combat tends to age best on mobile. It suits stop-and-start play, and you can pause mid-battle without stress. Ember of Vael is my current favorite for exactly that reason, but there are gems across the genre if you're patient.

My tip when trying new ones: turn on airplane mode before you even start the tutorial. You'll find out fast whether a game truly runs offline, and you'll save yourself the disappointment of hitting a server wall three hours in.
